This spinning rod was made for drifting for small steelhead and trout. It excels at drifting night crawlers, salmon eggs, soft eggs, beads, and so on, or casting small lures like ¼ ounce Kastmasters, large Panther Martins, and small Rapalas. It’s perfect for that kind of fishing!
We tested this rod extensively on California’s Feather River steelhead, and also on the upper Sacramento River for large wild trout. We’ve also tested it on smallmouth and spotted bass.
Small K-Tek swimbaits are awesome on this rig! So we then tried it with Neds and dropshots too, with excellent results. The super soft tip lets fish bite but not feel you until it’s too late.

It’s also a great rod for shad, as we’ve confirmed on the Feather and Sacramento Rivers. You can feel the shad grub working and yet there is plenty of backbone to set the hook.
